BYD New Zealand has launched a support package for customers whose electrified vehicles were damaged in the severe flooding that has hit Greater Wellington over the past 48 hours.
The Chinese electrified vehicle brand announced the assistance programme through social media on Tuesday morning, offering help to owners impacted by the extreme weather event. The support covers roadside callouts, towing services, and vehicle inspections at authorised BYD service centres.
Affected customers can also access loan vehicles for up to five days through CARBN while processing insurance claims. BYD is directing impacted drivers to contact its roadside assistance line on 0800 293 288 or visit their local BYD dealer.
The support initiative comes as a state of emergency remains active across the Wellington region following record-breaking rainfall that triggered flash flooding, slips and evacuations from Sunday night into Monday.
Wellington Mayor Andrew Little says 77mm of rain fell within a single hour early Monday morning, with the southern suburbs bearing the brunt of the deluge. Fire and Emergency responded to more than 150 incidents across Vogeltown, Mornington, Newtown, Berhampore, Kingston and Island Bay, with images of cars lifted onto fences by floodwater circulating widely on social media.
Red heavy rain warnings remain in force for Wellington and Wairarapa through Tuesday, with additional rainfall forecast for the region.
“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the flooding across Greater Wellington,” BYD New Zealand says in the social media post. “Please stay safe.”
